Preparing Your Lawn For Winter

Preparing Your Lawn For Winter
August 9, 2026 Boyd Robathan

As the seasons shift, we are moving our focus at Robathan’s Gardens to Autumn lawn care. Taking the right steps between September and November is essential to repair Summer wear and protect grass from harsh Winter frosts. To ensure your lawn returns lush and vibrant next Spring, Boyd and the team recommend moss & thatch treatment, scarification to remove dead debris. To open up the lawn surface, we recommend soil aeration to relieve soil compaction, boost root oxygen, and prevent winter waterlogging.

The application of fertiliser that is rich in potassium and phosphorus is advised to strengthen roots. At this time of year we avoid feeds that are high in nitrogen as they encourage new growth that is vulnerable to frost. Sowing fresh grass seed over bare patches takes full advantage of warm, damp Autumn soil.

Over the Autumn period, it is vital to keep lawns clear of any debris especially wet leaves which suffocate grass that can trigger fungal diseases.
